When it is Winter in Colorado going to the Eastern Caribbean is quite nice to escape the cold! Soft sand, warm weather, ocean views, cold drink in my hand…can’t complain!
Saint Thomas was the first stop for our East Caribbean cruise and it was a hoppin’ place when we got there as we were not the only cruise ship. With it being so crowded, we decided to invest the time and money into the taxi ride to the other side of the island. I believe it was $10/person per ride. Our driver took us to Coki Beach and we were the first group to arrive! However, as time passed on, the beach continued to get more and more crowded. By the time we left, there were hundreds of people there.
Saint Thomas was the best rated place to snorkel out of the countries we were going to and I would agree that snorkeling was the nicest here. More specifically, Coki beach had good reviews for snorkeling. We ended up bringing out own snorkel gear but you were able to rent different things at the beach including food to feed the fish, kayaks, paddle boards, and snorkel gear. The fish seem quite conditioned to the food as certain schools of fish did not swim away from you as you approached! There were a variety of different fish to see and one of our group members spotted some cuttlefish as well. Kyle ended up trying to do some fly fishing and had some success with that as well.
We decided to leave the beach in the afternoon once it got super crowded. We went back to the other side of the island and we wanted to eat true Caribbean cuisine for lunch. We asked our taxi driver the best place to go and he mentioned a place called Trenchtown Rock Jamaican Bar & Restaurant. This place had a variety of options for Caribbean food and was quite delicious.
It was getting close to the time to head back to the ship so after lunch we called it a day. Of course, anywhere near the ships docks you have tons and tons of different shopping experiences with people trying to sell you stuff or get you into their store. There were a lot of locals trying to give us taxi rides or get us into their stores.
We were lured into a store by a guy stating that the “beautiful ladies get free bracelets.” Of course, to be polite we went into the store to “look.” The guy ended up placing a bracelet on one of my friends and then stated that he would charge us $20, instead of $30, because we were ladies. Myself and another friend ended up walking out of the store but the friend we were with who got the bracelet placed on her wrist was expected to pay for it. It is little things like that that can make you feel uncomfortable and scammed but just say “no thank you” and keep on walking.
Overall, Saint Thomas was just a relaxing day on the beach. I am not sure if I would choose to go back there but it was definitely a nice place to experience with some good snorkeling.
